Fridjónsson è un narratore di fiabe. Le sue sono fiabe nordiche e polari, si intende: abitate da pesci e trichechi, attraversate da banchi di ghiacci e di nuvole, percorse da inaspettate sorgenti d’acqua, da un limbo ininterrotto di angeli e cinguettii. Si ritrova in lui, in particolare, il senso profondo della fiaba che non è, come credono gli adulti, un genere per bambini, ma una verità originaria: una verità espressa con una logica non libresca che può essere capita anche dai più piccoli, ma che ha valore per tutte le età.
La pittura di Fridjónsson esprime, con ironica soavità, quello che negli Anni Ottanta veniva chiamato genius loci e che si potrebbe definire come la volontà, consapevole o inconsapevole non importa, di superare uno stile genericamente internazionale, attingendo alla propria geografia di affetti, di vicende, di memoria. |

Fridjónsson is a storyteller. His are northern, polar fairytales, full of fish and walrus, crossed by ice sheets and clouds, where unexpected water springs appear and there’s an uninterrupted limbo of angels and birds chirping. In his work there’s the deeper meaning of fairytales which are not, contrary to what many adults believe, specifically children’s literature, but contain the truth at the heart of things; a truth expressed without bookish logic that children can understand and, at the same time, capable of communicating with people of all ages.
With ironic sweetness, Fridjónsson’s painting expresses what in the 1980s came to be called genius loci which might be defined as a wish, conscious or unconscious -it’s unimportant- to go beyond a more general international style, by drawing upon one’s own affective geography of memories and experience. |
